Note: DJ’s Clam Shack has multiple locations but this write-up is focused primarily on the Key West location on Duval Street.

Located on the bustling Duval Street in Key West, DJ’s Clam Shack might look unassuming from the outside. But don’t let its modest appearance fool you.

This seafood spot has earned its reputation as one of the Florida Keys’ must-try eateries. It even caught the attention of Food Network star Guy Fieri who featured it on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (video).

Seafood Menu

The Legendary Lobster Roll: This is perhaps the most talked-about item on DJ’s menu.

And the overstuffed Maine lobster roll lives up to its reputation.

It’s served on a perfectly buttered and toasted roll that somehow manages to hold together despite being loaded with tender succulent meat. And this dish rivals what you’d find in Boston or anywhere in New England.

If you visit DJ’s Clam Shack then these lobster rolls should be on your check for sure.

Conch Fritters: These fritters might be regarded as some of the best in Key West.

If you’ve never tried conch before, imagine a delightful hybrid between muscles and clams with a slightly chewier texture.

DJ’s fritters are perfectly seasoned with peppers and spices that really feel unique.

Garlic Steamed Clams: These are a true delight for seafood enthusiasts as these middle neck clams are bathed in a buttery garlic sauce and served with slices of garlic bread. This makes it easy to soak up the juices like broth!

The addition of pickled jalapeños provides a surprising kick that balances the richness of the dish.

Clam Chowder: Creamy, flavorful, and packed with chunky goodness. DJ’s clam chowder doesn’t skimp on the clams.

Unlike other restaurants that load their chowder with potatoes, DJ’s focuses on the star ingredient! And this delivers a satisfying bowl that seafood lovers will appreciate.

Onion Rings: Perfectly crunchy with just the right amount of seasoning in the batter, these homemade rings come with a delicious chipotle dipping sauce that elevates them above your standard side.

Cole Slaw: Don’t overlook this simple side. It may not seem like much, but DJ’s cole slaw really stands on its own.

Shrimp Options: From the garlic shrimp roll featuring fresh pink Gulf shrimp on a soft, buttery Texas toast-style roll to the flavorful shrimp po’boy, the non-lobster sandwiches deserve attention here too.

Casual Seaside Charm

Beachside Ambiance: DJ’s embraces a laid-back no-frills atmosphere that perfectly captures the Key West vibe.

Don’t expect white tablecloths or fancy decor – this is authentic seafood shack territory.

Prime People-Watching: The outdoor seating along Duval Street offers some of the best people-watching in all of Key West.

Grab a seat at one of the rustic picnic tables facing the street and enjoy the parade of tourists and locals. There’s a lot to see.

Other Seating: While the front patio seating is most visible, there are additional seating areas along the side and back of the restaurant as well.

Casual Countertop Ordering: This isn’t a full-service restaurant. Instead you’ll order at the counter and then find your own seat. This adds to the casual beachy feel of the experience.

Stuff That’s Good To Know

Pricing Perspective: Expect to pay tourist-area prices for the food. So it won’t exactly be the cheapest pound-for-pound. A meal will likely set you back $20-30 per person (give or take).

Timing Your Visit: Lines can stretch down the street during peak times, so consider visiting during slightly off-hours for lunch or dinner.

Also note that they close daily between 4-5 PM so plan your visit accordingly.

Somewhat Limited Menu: DJ’s doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. Instead they focus on doing seafood right. The menu is compact but excellently executed.

Bathroom Situation: There’s just a single bathroom and I did see some mentions online that this can get backed up during really busy periods. I did not have a problem but just something to keep in mind.

Beverage Options: The drink selection is simple, featuring soft drinks and local beers rather than a full bar. That said, a cold beer pairs great with their seafood offerings so you likely won’t miss a full bar here.

Quick Turnaround: Even when busy, food tends to come out quickly. So this spot is a good choice if you want a meal but don’t want to spend too much time waiting on it or eating a full multi-course platter.
