Aquatic Highlights

The Wetlands Trail: Step into a meticulously recreated Florida ecosystem where you’ll find yourself surrounded by native wildlife.

Alligators bask in their habitat while otters play nearby, and the most unique feature is the free-flying birds that soar throughout the space, creating an authentic outdoor experience indoors.

The open-top design allows for unobstructed viewing and a chance to get remarkably close to the creatures.

Coral Reef Gallery: Marvel at the breathtaking 500,000-gallon tank that serves as the centerpiece of the aquarium.

This massive exhibit is home to colorful schools of fish, imposing sharks, and majestic sea turtles gliding through crystal-clear waters.

Find a bench and take a moment to watch these magnificent creatures swim past the floor-to-ceiling glass. It’s a surprisingly meditative experience.

Interactive Touch Experiences: You can even get hands-on with marine life in several unique touch pools throughout the aquarium.

The Stingray Touch Pool lets you gently feel the velvety skin of these graceful creatures as they glide past.

Even more remarkable is the Moon Bay exhibit where you can actually touch jellyfish, which is an experience you won’t find at many aquariums in the US.

Madagascar Exhibit: Encounter fascinating creatures from the exotic island of Madagascar, including the playful ring-tailed lemurs.

This unique addition sets The Florida Aquarium apart from others by expanding beyond purely aquatic displays to showcase the interconnectedness of diverse ecosystems.

Penguin Exhibit: While the current penguin area is modest (with plans for a significant expansion in 2025), these charming African penguins still delight visitors with their waddling antics and playful personalities.

Atmosphere & Design

Open Concept Layout: Unlike many northern aquariums where animals are behind fences or fully enclosed, The Florida Aquarium features numerous open-top exhibits that create a more natural, immersive atmosphere.

This innovative design allows birds to fly freely and provides unobstructed viewing of many exhibits.

Multi-Level Interior: Spread across three floors, the aquarium guides you through different zones with the main animal exhibits concentrated on the second level.

The thoughtful layout prevents the space from feeling overcrowded even during busy periods.

The well-maintained facilities and clean environment enhance the overall experience.

Outdoor Areas: When the weather permits, kids can cool off at the popular Splash Pad, a water play area that provides the perfect break during your visit.

There’s also a playground for additional outdoor fun.

Other Considerations

Pricing: Admission as of this writing runs about $30 per adult and $25 per child. So it’s not the cheapest museum you could visit.

As a rough estimate, it’d probably run approximately $120 for a family of four.

Parking Options: Parking can be challenging, to be very blunt about it. Especially during peak times.

The aquarium garage costs about $20 with hourly rates available at $5 per hour.

Consider arriving early if possible, and particularly on weekends or on days off or summer break when kids are out of school.

You’ll find parking either way but it might be more challenging where you’d have to wait a bit longer during busier periods.

Best Times to Visit: Weekdays generally offer a more relaxed experience with fewer crowds.

If you must visit on a weekend, arriving early helps avoid the heaviest crowds.

You’ll probably want to spend around 2-4 hours exploring all the exhibits so plan for that total timeframe.

Advance Planning: Purchasing tickets online is highly recommended. It makes planning easier, and it guarantees the time slots you want during busy seasons like spring break or summer break.

Gift Shop & Dining Area: The Ray Café offers decent food options, though prices are typical of attraction dining (AKA it’s gonna cost a bit more than a typical cafe).

The gift shop carries a wide selection of souvenirs, including popular Axolotl merchandise. If you’ve got young kids they’ll probably find something they like here.
