Built in 1891 by renowned railroad magnate Henry Flagler, the Old Jail Museum stands as one of St. Augustine’s most intriguing historical landmarks.
Designed to blend seamlessly with the city’s picturesque Victorian aesthetic, this Romanesque Revival building with Queen Anne Victorian elements served as the St. Johns County Jail until 1953.
Today it offers a fascinating glimpse into the harsh realities of the penal system from a bygone era.

Key Highlights
Immersive Experience: As you enter the Old Jail, you’ll be “processed in” as a special guest by your inmate tour guide.
These engaging characters bring history to life through their knowledge, humor, and theatrical presentations that transport you back to the turn of the century.
Real & Rich History: The building was originally constructed to replace a downtown jail near the Hotel Ponce de Leon. But this facility held up to 72 inmates at a time in cramped conditions.
It’s also the oldest surviving government building in St. Johns County.
It stands as a testament to St. Augustine’s complex past.
Fun Interactive Elements: Try on prisoner uniforms, take photos in the convict photo area, and explore the grounds at your own pace.
Did I mention the prisoner uniforms?
The tour guides strike the perfect balance between keeping things moving and allowing visitors time to absorb the atmosphere and details.

Inside The Cells
Truly Primitive Conditions: The jail operated without indoor plumbing until 1914. Which seems crazy…
But with open barred windows and up to four inmates crammed into each cell, conditions was rough (to say the least).
During Florida’s scorching summers, the heat inside must have been unbearable.
Maximum Security: The second floor houses additional cells and displays actual weapons confiscated from prisoners.
You’ll also see “death row” and learn about the facility’s execution history at the gallows located in the back courtyard.
Historical Artifacts: The museum proudly displays Florida’s first fingerprinting kit along with various restraints and other law enforcement tools from the era.

The Paranormal Side
Tours For Its Haunted Reputation: Recognized as one of the most haunted buildings in the country, the Old Jail offers special “After Dark” tours for anyone brave enough to participate in actual paranormal investigations.
I recommend it to anyone who could make the trip at night!
Real Ghost Hunting Equipment: Night tours provide visitors with ghost hunting tools including REM Pods, EMF Detectors, Infrared Thermal Imagers, and Dowsing Rods.
Many visitors report capturing evidence of spiritual activity, particularly in the Solitary Confinement room.
Spectral Residents: Several spirits are said to linger within the jail’s walls, including a female ghost named Sarah and apparitions of former deputies.
Some visitors have even reported capturing these entities in photographs (which I’d love to see, by the way!)

Practical Information
Tour Schedule: Daytime historical tours run every 15 minutes starting at 9:00 AM with the last tour departing at 4:30 PM. For ghost hunters, paranormal experiences are available from midnight until 2:30 AM.
Accessibility Considerations: The facility is not wheelchair accessible due to tight spaces and steep stairs. Stroller parking is available before entering the interior portion of the tour.
Not Super Child-Friendly: While educational, some exhibits contain some graphic images related to hangings and crimes.
Granted, most guides adapt their presentation for younger visitors in their group so you can still have a good time with your kids!
But parents should consider whether children under 8 would be comfortable with the subject matter.
Pricing: Tickets cost $16.99 per person (as of this writing).
While some consider this slightly expensive, most feel the experience offers good value for the entertainment and historical knowledge gained.
Parking: Free parking is available directly in front of the jail and at the Immaculate Conception Church across the street. Although it can be challenging during peak tourist seasons or on holidays or weekends with good weather.

Additional Amenities
Gift Shop: Located next door to the jail, the gift shop offers unique souvenirs – if you’re into that kinda thing.
And the shop even houses a small ice cream parlor serving delicious iced treats! It’s perfect for cooling off after your tour.
Photo Opportunities: Don’t miss the chance to take memorable photos at the gallows or behind bars.
These make for unique vacation mementos that friends and family will find both amusing and intriguing.
Nearby Attractions: The Old Jail is part of a complex with other museums and stores in the area! This makes it easy to spend several hours exploring St. Augustine’s rich history.
So if you find yourself interested so far, what’s got your attention?
Are you a history buff?

Well no matter your answer, the Old Jail Museum is calling your name.
